Ain’t that the truth. Sure I’ve met whiny artists in AA who said they created their best work while intoxicated, but I don’t believe them.
Once you make up your mind to quit an addiction, it’s easy. It’s getting there that’s a hell of a hard thing.
Of course alcohol kills creativity, it turns the higher thinking part of the mind off. The only way alcohol could possibly help creativity is if the person is creative but is too inhibited or ashamed of whatever it is they are creating and need booze to loosen their neurosis up.
Plus alcohol fucks with the hand-eye coordination and judgement. Painting and drawing is all about hand-eye coordination and judgement and technique. You’re 100% correct Liz, the people in the representational arts fields who claim to have created their best work while drunk are full of shit. Maybe a writer or photographer or poet can benefit from alcohol but a painter or sculptor cannot. Jackson Pollack was a drunk but it wasn’t the alcohol that made him great, he was great despite the alcohol.
Alcohol is a shitty drug, all things considered, a low-level stupifying primitive nonintellectual buzz. But it’s legal and intertwined with society and sometimes everybody needs a low-level stupifying nonintellectual buzz to facilitate getting emotions out and letting off steam.
All I know is, I’m oooooover it! Now to conquer my puzzle habit.
